20100922 - Jobrack-McDaniel, Remote vs Laboratory usability evaluation

Remote versus laboratory usability evaluations with static versus interactive graphical user interfaces

by Jobrack-McDaniel, Naomi Ruth, M.A., San Jose State University, 1999 , 48 pages; AAT 1394539

My Interest:

(1) 2 x 2 type of research.

(2) Remote vs Lab usabiity test.

Action:

Low priority to read the Dissertation. Reason: scanned version.

In a mixed design, computer generated static and interactive graphical user interfaces (GUIs) were presented to two types of end users (Software Developers, Technical Publications) for evaluation of "look and feel" and proposed functionality.

The evaluations took place at remote workstations or in a usability test laboratory.

Comments: This seems to be a 2 x 2 type of research.
(1) Software Developers vs Technical Publications.
(2) Remote workstations vs Usability test laboratory.

The investigation sought to discover :
1) if interactive GUIs were better for presentation to evaluators than static GUIs,
2) if remote locations were as effective as laboratory settings for this type of
usability evaluation, and

3) if relationships existed between the dependent measures (subjective, objective) and between the groups.

Results Discussion

Two analyses of variance (for subjective and objective data) revealed no effect of location.

Interaction effects were found for fidelity and participant type.

A Pearson's correlation revealed no relationship between the objective and subjective dependent measures.

Note: Year 1999. Softcopy Dissertation is scanned version; difficult to copy and paste; difficult to blog.
